Coastal Security Fencing for the Institute for Maritime Technology

Coastal Security Fencing for the Institute for Maritime Technology

Project Overview

Gateway Metalworks supplied and installed a high-security ClearVu mesh fence along the coastal perimeter of the Institute for Maritime Technology in Simon's Town. The build secures a sensitive Armscor defence research facility while maintaining clear sightlines along the shoreline.

The Institute for Maritime Technology supports the South African Navy with research into maritime systems, underwater warfare, and autonomous vehicles. The site demands a perimeter that blocks intrusion, survives harsh coastal conditions, and meets defence sector standards.

Gateway Metalworks installed a full ClearVu high security mesh fence along the seaward boundary. The narrow-aperture mesh blocks climbing, cutting, and tool penetration while maintaining clear visibility for security teams. Powder-coated galvanised steel posts and marine-grade fasteners handle the salt spray, humidity, and wind loads of the Atlantic shoreline.

Case Study

THE CHALLENGE

  • Secure a sensitive defence research site against intrusion from the seaward boundary.
  • Build a fence that survives constant salt spray, high humidity, and strong coastal winds.
  • Maintain clear visibility for security teams monitoring the shoreline.
  • Integrate the fence with an existing concrete sea wall of varying height and contour.
  • Close off small wall gaps and drainage openings without blocking water flow.
  • Meet defence sector security and compliance standards.

THE APPROACH

  • Conducted a full coastal site survey to map wall contours, drainage points, and wind exposure.
  • Specified ClearVu high security mesh in marine-grade powder-coated finish.
  • Fabricated custom steel base plates to anchor posts directly into the concrete sea wall.
  • Installed stainless steel security fasteners and anti-tamper clamp bars on every panel.
  • Stepped panel heights to follow the natural contour of the sea wall.
  • Built and fitted a reinforced double-leaf access gate matching the main fence security rating.
  • Added bolted mesh covers over wall expansion joints and drainage openings.
  • Completed the build with strict site access protocols suited to a defence facility.
